Multitudes católicas, sociedad de masas y política en la Argentina: reflexiones a partir del Congreso Eucarístico Nacional de 1940

El artículo estudia la conformación de multitudes católicas durante el Congreso Eucarístico Nacional de 1940, celebrado en la ciudad de Santa Fe (Argentina), desde una perspectiva sociocultural que destaca la multidimensionalidad del fenómeno y los vínculos entre el catolicismo y la sociedad de masas. Con dicho fin, el Congreso es abordado a través de diferentes claves: la cultura de masas, la industria del turismo, el discurso publicitario, el consumo, la lógica del espectáculo. Finalmente, a la luz de los resultados obtenidos, se ensaya un análisis de la dimensión política, con el propósito de comprender el modo en que dichos procesos alimentaron la retórica del "mito de la nación católica" y contribuyeron a fortalecer las posiciones de la Iglesia Católica en la política argentina.
The article discusses the formation of Catholic crowds during the National Eucharistic Congress of 1940, held in the city of Santa Fe (Argentina) from a cultural perspective that emphasizes the multidimensionality of the phenomenon and the links between Catholicism and mass society. To that end, the Congress is analyzed from different aspects: mass culture, the tourism industry, advertising discourse, consumption, the logic of the spectacle. Finally, in light of the results obtained, the political dimension is analyzed, in order to understand how these processes fueled the rhetoric of the "myth of the Catholic nation," and helped strengthen the positions of the Catholic Church in 20th-century Argentinean politics.
