Spinoza, Montaigne y los límites del horizonte intelectual de la tolerancia

En un artículo al que podríamos considerar como un clásico, Filippo Mignini se preguntaba si no era posible situar a la doctrina de Spinoza más allá del horizonte histórico e intelectual delimitado por el concepto de tolerancia. Retomando esas reflexiones, el objetivo de este trabajo es el de reconsiderar los textos de Michel de Montaigne desde la perspectiva abierta por Mignini. Creemos que a partir de esa reconsideración estaremos en condiciones de señalar el carácter ambivalente de las reflexiones del ensayista sobre los conflictos teológico-políticos; carácter que lo sitúa, a la vez, más acá y más allá del horizonte intelectual de la tolerancia. En efecto, si bien parece posible afirmar que la posición política y pública asumida por Montaigne puede ubicarse un paso más acá de la abierta tolerancia, en tanto se muestra reticente a aceptar en el seno de una sociedad habituada al catolicismo las novedades de la Reforma; no obstante, la actitud privada que éste parece haber asumido, y la ética del ensayo de la alteridad que la caracteriza, tal vez puedan permitirnos ubicar al autor un paso más allá.
In an article that we can consider a classic, Filippo Mignini wondered if it was possible to place the doctrine of Spinoza beyond the historical and intellectual horizon delimited by the concept of tolerance. Based on this idea, the aim of this paper is to reconsider the texts of Michel de Montaigne from the perspective opened by Mignini. We believe that from this point of view, we will be able to point out the ambivalent character of the essayist reflections on the theological-political conflicts; character that places him at the same time, prior to and beyond the intellectual horizon of tolerance. Indeed, it seems possible to say that the political and public position assumed by Montaigne can be placed one step ahead of the open tolerance, because he is reluctant to accept the news of Reformation in a society accustomed to Catholicism. However, the private attitude that he appears to have assumed, and the ethics of otherness that characterizes his thought, could provide enough ground to locate the author one step further of the concept of tolerance.
