La progresiva certidumbre de que la sociedad humana está encauzada en un rumbo insostenible es ya reconocida y compartida por los sectores científico-tecnológicos y los estadistas responsables e informados en casi todo el mundo. Sin embargo, después de cuatro décadas de eventos internacionales, convocados para lograr acuerdos que permitan una transición progresiva, no dolorosa, hacia ese destino inexorable, las dificultades para lograrlo parecen insuperables y, a pesar de todos los esfuerzos realizados para la generación de propuestas y compromisos al más alto nivel mundial, ya comentados, los graves problemas que deben abordarse, continúan profundizándose, dejando escaso margen para el optimismo. Es que el cambio necesario requiere de un extraordinario esfuerzo de la sociedad toda para comenzar a producir la transición hacia la revolución de la Sostenibilidad, sin duda, una transformación infinitamente más profunda, compleja y trascendente, que las que produjeron la revolución Agraria hace 10.000 años y la revolución Industrial, hace casi tres siglos. A diferencia de aquellas, que se desarrollaron en forma espontánea y no planificada; la revolución de la Sostenibilidad deberá responder a estrategias consensuadas, actuando a escala global, sobre una realidad en continuo cambio, con cronogramas acotados y con una importante medida de incertidumbre, Además, dando marco a toda la gestión, es indispensable contar con una dosis de solidaridad intra e inter-generacional qué, por el momento, parece solamente una ilusión.
This paper reviews the historical construction of the concept of sustainability by exploring thoughts, opinions and proposals on environmental issues, with the goal that this analysis will help to explore concepts that bring us closer to a more sustainable development strategy. The fundamental importance of the sustainable development of human society in relation to its ecological support is confirmed through the interrelated issues of habitat and energy. Of these issues, in terms of their dominance in relation to sustainable development, the paper includes: the uncontrolled growth of world population, the increasing rate of urbanization, the intensive use of non-renewable natural resources, the waste emission of pollutants and the inequitable quality of life of urban populations. The paper attempts a brief historical overview of the evolution of the concept of sustainability, as well as of the intellectual contributions that have helped to shape and to demonstrate the complex alternative future scenarios of the human condition on Earth. In doing so, it hopes to make a modest contribution to helping both to find our way to a new paradigm of "sustainable society" and to engage in the search for alternatives that can mean an approach to achieving environmental, global and local sustainability of the human habitat.
