Onofroff en Buenos Aires (1895): Apogeo y caída de un ilusionista

El objetivo de este trabajo es reconstruir la visita realizada por el ilusionista Onofroff a Buenos Aires entre marzo y junio de 1895. Durante esos meses, en los principales diarios de la ciudad aparecieron numerosos artículos y notas que reflejan claramente el impacto ejercido por el visitante en distintos actores de la escena cultural y científica. Los shows brindados por Onofroff en dos teatros de la ciudad no solamente despertaron el interés de un público anónimo y curioso, sino que desencadenaron distintas reacciones por parte de la comunidad científica y de la elite intelectual. El análisis de esas reacciones aporta elementos que permiten comprender de un modo más acabado distintas dimensiones de la historia cultural de fines del siglo XIX. En tal sentido, a lo largo de este artículo habremos de mostrar de qué manera las discusiones referidas a los poderes del ilusionista dieron pie tanto a una recuperación de debates referidos al campo de lo sobrenatural, como a una renovación del lenguaje médico sobre fenómenos como el hipnotismo. De tal forma, y en continuidad con otras investigaciones recientes, pondremos de relieve el modo en que los hechos "sobrenaturales" podían ser alojados en los diálogos de los académicos.
The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the visit to Buenos Aires made by the illusionist Onofroff from March to June 1895. During those months, in the most important newspapers of the city appeared numerous articles and notes that clearly reflect the impact made by the visitor on different members of the cultural and scientific scene. The shows made by Onofroff in two theaters of the city not only attracted the interest of an anonymus and curious public, but also triggered different reactions from the scientific community and the intellectual elite. The analysis of these reactions provides elements that allow us to have a better understanding of different dimensions of the cultural history of the late nineteenth century. On that sense, throuhout this article we will show how the discussions concerning the illusionist's powers gave rise both to a recovery of some debates relation to the field of the supernatural, and to a renewal of the medical language about phenomena like hypnotism. Thus, and in continuity with other recent researches, we will highlight how the "supernatural" facts could be accepted in the academics' dialogues
