La celebración de los grandes hombres: Funerales gloriosos y carreras post mortem en Argentina

El artículo analiza los funerales organizados por el Estado nacional argentino entre 1906 y 1914. Los funerales son considerados como un rito de pasaje y como fiestas cívicas a través de las cuales el régimen celebraba a la vez a sus grandes hombres y sus propios méritos. El artículo es sensible a las particularidades de cada funeral pero apunta especialmente a subrayar los rasgos compartidos y a captar el mensaje político similar que disparó el Estado. Se explora el rol pedagógico que las elites en el Gobierno atribuían a estos funerales apuntando a rescatar la preocupación por el orden, la civilidad de las masas y la austeridad republicana. Los funerales de Estado auguraban también un trabajo oficial, en ocasiones privado, de memoria y de celebración póstuma. En el apartado final el artículo especula sobre las posibles razones por las cuales estos “grandes hombres”, que fueron aclamados por el Estado y también por una porción significativa de la población al momento de sus muertes, no recibieron en el curso del siglo XX y no reciben hoy un culto al cuerpo, ni fueron ni son objeto de manipulaciones deliberadas.
This article analyzes the funerals organized by the Argentine National State from 1906 to 1914. These funerals were considered as rites of passage and as public feasts through which the regime honored their great men as well as their own merits. This paper deals with the peculiar characteristics of each funeral, although it lays emphasis on their common features and particularly on grasping the similar political message given by the State. It looks at the pedagogic role that the government elites attributed to these funerals for the sake of order, civic mindedness and republican austerity. State funerals also made way for public and sometimes private work related to memory and posthumous celebration. The last section of the article speculates about the possible reasons why the bodies of these "great men", acclaimed by the State and by a significant part of the population at the time of their death, do not enjoy cult status or are objects of deliberate manipulations neither in the 20th century nor at present.
