进步主义史学"产生自特纳对美国的移民殖民主义根源的"发现",因而带有深刻的种族主义特征,但其对"民主的"拓殖者的赞美也有着平民党运动的背景。特纳的著作为比尔德的著作提供了一个出发点,后者的著作旨在描述发生在西部拓殖者内部的资本原始积累过程,对美国资本主义乃至扩张主义的研究和批判构成其著作的核心。进步主义运动试图扭转现代社会的发展方向,过去几十年一系列重大事件的发生也凸显了进步主义史学的其他消极面。不过,进步主义史学家为未来的学者提供了有益的帮助,因为他们指明了早期美国历史侵略扩张等重要特征
