Abstract:
The title compound, [Zn(C19H12N5)2], crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P43212, with the monomer residing on a twofold axis. The imidazole N-bound H atoms are disordered over the two positions, with refined occupancies of 0.59 (3) and 0.41 (3). The strong similarities to, and slight differences from, a reported P42212 polymorph which has a 50% smaller unit-cell volume [Harvey, Baggio, Muñoz & Baggio (2003). Acta Cryst. C59, m283-m285], to which the present structure bears a group-subgroup relationship, are discussed.

Abstract:
Current regulations command to properly characterize pharmaceutically relevant solid systems. Chemometrics comprise a range of valuable tools, suitable to process large amounts of data and extract valuable information hidden in their structure. This review aims to detail the results of the fruitful association between analytical techniques and chemometrics methods, focusing on those which help to gain insight into the characteristics of drug polymorphism as an important aspect of the solid state of bulk drugs and drug products. Hence, the combination of Raman, terahertz, mid- and near- infrared spectroscopies, as well as instrumental signals resulting from X-ray powder diffraction, 13C solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and thermal methods with quali-and quantitative chemometrics methodologies are examined. The main issues reviewed, concerning pharmaceutical drug polymorphism, include the use of chemometrics-based approaches to perform polymorph classification and assignment of polymorphic identity, as well as the determination of given polymorphs in simple mixtures and complex systems. Aspects such as the solvation/desolvation of solids, phase transformation, crystallinity and the recrystallization from the amorphous state are also discussed. A brief perspective of the field for the next future is provided, based on the developments of the last decade and the current state of the art of analytical instrumentation and chemometrics methodologies.

Abstract:
Chocolate manufacturing involves steps during which molten mass is prepared to be converted in a solid with selected textural and melting properties which are vital for the consumer's acceptance. A central element in this behavior is the continuous oily phase (cocoa butter), in which solid particles like sucrose and cocoa solids, refined to a selected particle size are dispersed and stabilized. Emulsifiers are important in particle coating and modify the viscosity of chocolate mass to give it adequate flowability during manufacturing. Furthermore, these molecules should not hinder the appearing of β-V polymorph during chocolate solidification. In this work we evaluated ethylcellulose (EC) copolymers with different mean molecular weights (MMW) dissolved in medium chain triglycerides (MCT) oil, on the rheological and crystallization parameters of molten chocolate and cocoa butter. Rheology shows that EC induced a dose-dependent increase in yield value and viscosity, whereas MCT mainly induced a reduction in yield value. Therefore, by adjusting the EC concentration in the mixture it was possible to tune the rheological parameters of molten chocolate. Besides, X-ray diffraction showed that at the low proportions used to modify the rheological parameters (up to 0.2% EC and 1.9% TCM) EC-MCT blend did not affect the crystallization of cocoa butter which retained the β-V polymorph. The effects observed did not show a direct dependence with the MMW of EC suggesting that the modification of the rheological parameters is mostly thermodynamic (due to its surface activity) rather than kinetic (due to an increase in viscosity).

Abstract:
In this study, for the first time, using similar methods, we compared the population density and distribution across different substrate types of Limnoperna fortunei and Dreissena polymorpha, as well as their impacts on the composition of benthic communities. Data on L. fortunei were obtained in Rio Tercero Reservoir, Argentina, whereas studies on D. polymorpha were conducted in North America and Europe. We found that, similar to the zebra mussel, L. fortunei creates high densities on hard substrates in the littoral zone, and avoids soft substrates in the profundal zone; however, the overall population density of L. fortunei in a water body seems to be higher than that of zebra mussels. Additional studies on Limnoperna are needed to confirm this hypothesis. The effect of L. fortunei on macrobenthos is very similar to the effect of D. polymorpha and is associated with an increase in the overall diversity, density, and biomass of native macroinvertebrates in druses compared with bare sediments. The presence of L. fortunei druses in the littoral zones of Río Tercero has increased the average species richness of native benthic invertebrates per sample by almost 70% and their density and biomass by threefold, positively affecting epifaunal organisms and negatively burrowing invertebrates and unionids. In the near future, the freshwaters of North America may be colonized by L. fortunei, resulting in strong impacts on entire invaded ecosystems and devastating impacts on native unionids, especially in the southern regions of the United States, which are not colonized with dreissenids.

Abstract:
Philonotis polymorpha is a medium sized plant, yellowish-green to reddish-brown below, commonly found growing sterile on wet rocks or soil in forests, near rivers and waterfalls. Diagnostic characters of this species are the dimorphic leaves, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, the abruptly short-acuminate apex, margins plane, serrate at the apex, entire at the base, the excurrent, robust and well defined costae, ending in a mucro, and the papillae projecting at proximal angles of laminal cells. During the development of this work, we have examined type specimens of several names within the genus. As result, four new synonyms are proposed for P. polymorpha, and three lectotypes are designated.

Abstract:
Nanocomposites obtained from incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles in different amounts, ranging from 0.5 to 5 wt.%, into an isotactic polypropylene (iPP) matrix are achieved via a straightforward and cost-effective melting process. These materials exhibit a powerful germicide capability over a wide variety of regular bacteria and other microorganisms widely present in the environment that cause infections and serious illness. The iPP-TiO2 nanocomposites show similar or improved structural characteristics than those of the pure iPP matrix and aspects as important as processability and final mechanical performance seem to be not affected because of the incorporation of these TiO2 nanoparticles. Validation of time–temperature superposition of the molten polymers is observed within the temperature range analyzed. On the other hand, the α polymorph is the one primarily attained for these specimens. Crystallinity and most probable crystallite size are slightly dependent on TiO2 content, both increasing as oxide composition is enlarged.

Abstract:
We report on the organization and outcome of the fourth blind test of crystal structure prediction, an international collaborative project organized to evaluate the present state in computational methods of predicting the crystal structures of small organic molecules. There were 14 research groups which took part, using a variety of methods to generate and rank the most likely crystal structures for four target systems: three single-component crystal structures and a 1:1 cocrystal. Participants were challenged to predict the crystal structures of the four systems, given only their molecular diagrams, while the recently determined but as-yet unpublished crystal structures were withheld by an independent referee. Three predictions were allowed for each system. The results demonstrate a dramatic improvement in rates of success over previous blind tests; in total, there were 13 successful predictions and, for each of the four targets, at least two groups correctly predicted the observed crystal structure. The successes include one participating group who correctly predicted all four crystal structures as their first ranked choice, albeit at a considerable computational expense. The results reflect important improvements in modelling methods and suggest that, at least for the small and fairly rigid types of molecules included in this blind test, such calculations can be constructively applied to help understand crystallization and polymorphism of organic molecules. © 2009 International Union of Crystallography.
